The government of The Gambia on Tuesday 13th February 2024, handed over 3 brand new vehicles to the Ministry of Justice. Two of the vehicles are earmarked for the National Agency Against Trafficking (NAATIP), while the third vehicle is meant for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The gesture came on the back of a stakeholder work session on the 2023/24 U.S Department of State Trafficking in Persons Questionnaire, where the Gambia Government through the Attorney General and the Minister for Justice pledged to deliver two vehicles to NAATIP in order to facilitate the operations of the Agency.

Keeping to the commitment made by the Government, His Excellency, Adama Barrow on Tuesday 13 February 2024 delivered the said vehicles to the Ministry of Justice.

Presenting the vehicles, Dawda A. Jallow, minister of Justice, thanked the government for supporting the work of his ministry and the agency under it.

He reassured the Gambian leader of his Ministry’s continued dedication to justice in the country.

President Adama Barrow highlighted the importance of NAATIP as the agency responsible for combatting trafficking in persons in The Gambia.

He also acknowledged the importance his government attaches to the offices of the beneficiaries, while indicating the need for the institutions to be well resourced in order to deliver the desired results.

The Gambian leader stated that the Gambia is assessed on its anti-trafficking efforts annually.

“Therefore, my government will continue to provide the necessary resources to supplement the process of protecting its people and making The Gambia a crime free State. This intervention, by The Gambia Government is expected to go a long way in resolving the mobility constraints previously faced by NAATIP. It is equally expected to facilitate the work of the office of the DPP in that regard.”

NAATIP’s efforts have greatly contributed to the Gambia maintaining its tier 2 ranking in the U.S Department of State Tip Report of 2023. With mobility issues becoming a thing of the past, it is expected that the agency will feature an increase in its activities across its 4 areas of intervention; prevention, prosecution, protection and partnership.
