Feb 4, 2025, 10:24 AM

In a landmark moment for The Gambia’s legal and intellectual community, the nation has launched its first-ever dedicated law magazine, JUSTICE: Let There Be Justice Though the Heavens Fall. This groundbreaking publication provides a vital platform for legal scholarship, critical analysis, and discussions on contemporary legal issues affecting The Gambia and beyond.

At the heart of this initiative is FaFa Edrissa M’Bai, a towering figure in The Gambia’s legal landscape, whose vision and dedication have made this historic publication a reality. A distinguished lawyer with over four decades of experience, M’Bai has twice served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice, playing a pivotal role in shaping the country’s legal framework. An intellectual powerhouse, he holds multiple honours and postgraduate degrees in Law and Political Science from the Universities of London and Keele, and has been widely revered for his extensive knowledge and contributions to legal jurisprudence.

Affectionately dubbed "The Mobile Law Library of The Gambia Bar" by the late legal luminary Bola Carrol, M’Bai has spent his career not only practicing law but also mentoring young legal minds, defending human rights, and advocating for legal reforms that promote transparency, accountability, and justice. His commitment to upholding the rule of law and fostering a just society has earned him a place among the nation’s most respected legal minds.

Under the editorial leadership of Dr. Cherno Omar Barry, JUSTICE brings together legal scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to discuss critical issues such as constitutional development, gender justice, and the judiciary’s role in democracy. The magazine is designed to bridge the gap between the legal profession and the public, making legal concepts more accessible and advocating for greater transparency, accountability, and professional ethics.

In his editorial foreword, Dr. Barry highlights the magazine’s mission:

“This magazine is more than just a publication; it is a movement towards strengthening legal integrity, ensuring access to justice, and promoting professional excellence. We envision it as a space where legal minds converge to debate, analyze, and contribute to the development of our legal system.”

With a commitment to human rights, legal literacy, and judicial reform, JUSTICE is set to become an invaluable resource for lawyers, judges, law students, and policymakers. It serves not only as a tribute to the nation’s legal pioneers but also as an inspiration for the next generation of legal minds to uphold the principles of justice and fairness.

Thanks to the visionary leadership of FaFa Edrissa M’Bai, The Gambia now has a legal publication that will shape conversations around justice, law, and governance for years to come. As the country embarks on this bold step in enhancing legal literacy and advocacy, JUSTICE: Let There Be Justice Though the Heavens Fall stands as a beacon of progress in The Gambia’s pursuit of a fairer and more just society.
