Chief of Defence Staff Mamat O.A. Cham recently announced that the Gambian Armed Forces (GAF) will be harvesting rice from 42 hectares of land, expecting to gather between 250 to 300 tons of rice in the next three weeks.

This announcement came during his visit to the Sapu Rice Field in Central River Region, as part of his nationwide tour of military locations across the country.

General Cham emphasised that the army was taking steps to help improve food self-sufficiency in The Gambia, particularly in rice production, which he said is a crucial part of the local diet.

He mentioned that the goal was to invest in new farming equipment to grow their rice and support the military’s economic stability.

“We have shared a project plan with the Central Bank that outlines what we need, including tractors and harvesting tools,” he disclosed. “With the support of the president, we are set to receive these tractors soon. We welcome any help from the public and experts to strengthen our efforts,” he said.

Looking ahead, CDS Cham expressed a firm vision for the future, stating that within 10 to 15 years, The Gambia should aim to stop importing rice altogether.

The upcoming harvest marks the first step of their project, and as the army gains more experience, they plan to train soldiers in farming skills. This training will help them start their businesses after they leave the military, said CDS Cham.

Ultimately, General Cham hopes to achieve food independence for the country, allowing The Gambia to produce enough food on its own without relying on outside sources.
