
On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, the firefighting robotic vehicle was officially unveiled at the One Infantry Battalion, located at Yundum Barracks, the esteemed home of the Infantry.
Captain Ndongo emphasised that the military's role extends far beyond merely defending the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity against external and internal threats; it is also about pioneering innovative technologies.
His groundbreaking inventions are designed to optimise resource utilisation and enhance efficiency in military operations.
The robotics scientist asserted that military firefighters play an essential role that encompasses fire prevention, suppression, rescue operations, and the safeguarding of military personnel, infrastructure, and equipment.
He expressed deep appreciation and heartfelt gratitude for the support provided by Colonel Abdoulie Mboob, of blessed memory, at the Headquarters of the Gambia National Army (GNA), as well as to the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Mamat O.A. Cham, through the Commander of the GNA, for granting the essential approval for the robot's launch. He also recognised the encouragement and support from his fellow officers, which played a vital role in this endeavour.
In his opening remarks, Commanding Officer of One Infantry Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Ambrose Dacosta, emphasised that “today is dedicated to honouring the remarkable accomplishments of Captain Alagie Ndongo”.
He noted that the innovation represents a pivotal milestone, not only for the battalion but also for the advancement of technology within the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) and all other security services collectively.
He praised Captain Ndongo for his brilliant innovation, highlighting that unmanned technological tools in the military significantly improve operational efficiency, minimise risks to personnel, and give armed forces a distinct advantage in intelligence gathering, surveillance, and various combat support needs.
Colonel Yero N.A. Jallow, speaking on behalf of the Commander of the Gambia National Army, Brigadier General Sait Njie, delivered a compelling keynote address highlighting the unwavering courage and dedication of the country’s brave soldiers and firefighters. “For years, these heroes have risked their lives to combat perilous infernos, serving as the backbone of our safety,” he said.
Colonel Jallow emphasised that the introduction of the firefighter robot exemplifies the GAF's commitment to technological advancement. He further stressed the importance of investing in local innovation and prioritiszing the well-being of those who selflessly put themselves in harm's way to protect others.
Haddy Nyang Jagne, a relative of the late Colonel Abdoulie Mboob, expressed her gratitude to the GAF for honouring the memory of Colonel Mboob. She emphasised that the military encompasses more than just weapons and combat; it also embraces progressive innovations.
The event showcased the groundbreaking unveiling of a firefighting robot, accompanied by an impressive demonstration of its fire-extinguishing capabilities. This innovative technology is anticipated to significantly enhance firefighting efforts and military operations in perilous environments.
