Female referee  Akhona  Makalima to  officiate Gambia-Cameroon  game tomorrow

For the first time in the football history of the Gambia, the Scorpions will play the quarter final of Afcon against Cameroon on Saturday 4 p.m. 

Akhona Makalima, a female referee has been tasked to officiate the match between the two sides.

It is important to note at this moment that all Gambian players and officials tested negative for covid-19 on Thursday.

Among the competing teams, The Gambia is ranked 150, the lowest in FIFA ranking.

Gambia first played Cameroon in the preliminary rounds and lost 1-0 on 6th September 2015 in Banjul. The Gambia again lost 2-0 in a return match on 3 September 2016 in Yaounde.

Cameroon has played 14 quarter finals and won five finals in 1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017.

Cameroon played 7 world cups in 1982, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2010 and 2014.

Gambia is seen as the underdogs, but the recent impressive performances have  surprised everybody.

Meanwhile the following  are the new Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations Prize Monies:

Winner: USD 5 million (an increase of USD 500 000)

Runner-up: USD 2.75 million (an increase of USD 250 000)

Semi-Finalists: USD 2.2 million (an increase of USD 200 000)

Quarter-Finalists: USD 1.175 million (an increase of USD 175 000)

This represents a total increase in the Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations prize money of USD 1.850m.
