Her election marks a significant milestone not only for UTG but for The Gambia as a whole, placing a Gambian legal scholar at the heart of continental efforts to advance and safeguard the rights and welfare of children.
In a statement, MOHERST described her victory as a moment of national pride and recognition of her years of dedicated scholarship, advocacy and service in the field of human rights. The Ministry noted that Dr. Nabaneh’s work has consistently focused on child rights, gender equality, legal reform and strengthening the African human rights system.
The African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child is a key organ of the African Union mandated to monitor the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. Members of the Committee play a critical role in interpreting the Charter, reviewing state reports, conducting investigations, and advising governments on strengthening child protection systems.
Dr Nabaneh brings to the Committee extensive academic and professional experience. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Washington in the United States, along with a Graduate Certificate in Law and Societies and a Qualitative Multi-Methods (QUAL) Certificate from the same institution. She also earned a Doctor of Laws (LLD) and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa from the University of Pretoria in South Africa, as well as a Certificate in Public International Law. Her academic journey began at the University of The Gambia, where she obtained her Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons).
Over the years, Dr Nabaneh has been widely recognised for her contributions to strengthening child protection frameworks and advancing legal standards across Africa. Her work spans research, policy engagement, teaching and advocacy, with a consistent focus on promoting accountability and improving the lived realities of children and vulnerable groups.
MOHERST joined the Government and people of The Gambia in congratulating Dr Nabaneh on what it described as a “remarkable and historic achievement,” reaffirming its continued support as she assumes her continental mandate.
Her election is expected to further elevate The Gambia’s presence within regional and continental human rights institutions, while inspiring a new generation of young legal scholars and advocates to pursue excellence in public service and international law.
