On the first day of the exhibition, the Gambian delegation held a series of strategic meetings with leading tour operators, travel buyers, and industry partners from across Europe and other international markets.
The engagements formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships within the global tourism industry while positioning The Gambia as a preferred destination for international travellers.
According to members of the delegation, the meetings provided an opportunity to showcase the country’s tourism offerings and reinforce its reputation as a welcoming destination known for its cultural heritage, warm hospitality, and unique attractions along the Gambia River.
This year’s ITB Berlin carried special significance, as the event celebrated its 60th anniversary, marking six decades of bringing together tourism professionals from around the world.
The exhibition also featured the multimedia presentation of the host country, Angola, which used the platform to promote itself not only as a destination for adventure tourism but also as a future venue for international conferences and events.
Meanwhile, amid ongoing global tensions, including the conflict in the Middle East, Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner and the Federal Government Commissioner for Tourism Christoph, emphasised the peace-building role of travel and tourism. Both officials expressed hope for a swift end to hostilities and highlighted tourism’s potential to foster understanding between nations.
Addressing approximately 700 guests, Dr. Mario Tobias, Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin GmbH, noted that in challenging times for the global tourism industry, platforms such as ITB Berlin remain essential for promoting dialogue and cooperation between countries and cultures.
During the ceremony, Dr. Tobias also received the UN Tourism Award from Shaikha Nasser Alnuwais in recognition of the exhibition’s role in advancing global tourism collaboration.
Further, the participation of The Gambia at ITB Berlin 2026 highlights the country’s continued commitment to strengthening its presence on the international tourism stage and attracting more visitors to its shores.
