Today’s address comes at a time when Gambians are keenly following developments around the economy, cost of living, and national security. Observers expect President Barrow to reflect on progress made under his administration and provide updates on ongoing reforms and development programmes.
In his last SoNA delivered in June 2025, President Barrow focused on consolidating gains and accelerating socio-economic transformation under the YIRWAA (2023–2027) development plan. The address highlighted steady economic growth, with support and validation from international institutions, including improved domestic revenue collection.
Infrastructure development featured prominently, with the government reporting significant expansion in the country’s road network and regional projects aimed at boosting connectivity and trade. The President also outlined reforms in key sectors, including plans to restructure water and electricity services and the introduction of a new land policy.
Tourism, a major pillar of the Gambian economy, also recorded positive growth, with projections of over 263,000 visitors during the 2024–2025 season. President Barrow further pointed to The Gambia’s growing international presence, citing active participation in global platforms such as the African Union and the United Nations.
Following last year’s address, members of the National Assembly of The Gambia engaged in debates focusing on pressing national issues, particularly the rising cost of living and security concerns. The Vice President later responded on behalf of the President.
As President Barrow prepares to deliver today’s address, expectations remain high that he will provide clear direction on tackling current challenges while sustaining development gains in The Gambia.
