Following recent clashes between Senegalese Armed Forces and members of the MFDC rebels in the Casamance region, concerns have mounted among Gambian border communities. Reports suggest that residents of Senegalese villages have fled into Gambian territory, raising questions about security and safety along the frontier.
The GAF deputy PRO Kanuteh, addressed these concerns and outlined the military’s stance, when asked about the security situation along the border, saying: “GAF is aware of the skirmishes in Casamance and maintains a visible presence on the Gambian side of the border,” he said.
While there are reports of people fleeing into Gambian communities, PRO Kanuteh added: “The GAF is consulting with local authorities and the Red Cross to verify such claims and provide assistance where necessary.”
Allegations of ammunition landing in Gambian territory
Asked about claims that some ammunition fired during the clashes may have landed within Gambian villages, Kanuteh acknowledged the risk given the geographical layout of the border. He explained that there have been purported reports to this effect, and the GAF is conducting investigations while engaging Senegalese counterparts.
GAF’s Preparedness and Monitoring
Kanuteh emphasised that the GAF remains ever alert, with strategic deployments along the border to monitor developments. “We are fully responsive and conducting investigations into these allegations,” he said.
Kanuteh confirmed that the GAF maintains close communication with Senegalese forces at all levels. This coordination, he said, is crucial to preventing spillover effects and ensuring the daily livelihoods of border residents is not disrupted.
On the possibility of further escalation, Kanuteh stressed that the GAF is prepared. “As ever, the GAF maintains a robust security posture ready to respond responsibly to any security threat against the Gambian population,” he stated.
Message to Gambians
“We assure the general public that GAF remains resolute in its mandate to protect the territorial integrity of the country and its people at all given times,” Kanuteh postulated.
Concluding, captain Kanuteh reaffirmed GAF’s vigilance and commitment to safeguarding Gambian communities amid the ongoing instability in Casamance.
