Following the passing of Alkalo Baldeh, Daddy Jallow, being the eldest in Jallow Kunda, was expected to succeed him as alkalo. However, members of Jawo Kunda reportedly rejected this arrangement, insisting that the new alkalo should come from their own clan.
“They went to Seyfo Lamin Dampha and the governor to lodge a complaint. The Seyfo confirmed that Daddy should indeed be the new alkalo, but since he was a UDP member, they refused to let him assume the position,” Bohum told What’s On–Gambia.
When asked about Daddy Jallow’s political affiliation, Bohum confirmed:
Yes, he was a UDP member before the 2016 Coalition, but he completely retired from politics after the elections. Despite that, they kept insisting that he still belonged to the UDP.
Bohum further revealed that the Seyfo visited the village recently and announced that the village imam, Samba Jawla, had been appointed as the new alkalo. The Seyfo reportedly informed residents that Jawla must hand over his role as imam to Jallow Kunda and assume his new duties as alkalo.
According to Bohum, the Seyfo stated that the directive came from the Local Governments minister and that the villagers were expected to comply.
When asked about the village’s atmosphere prior to the dispute, Bohum said:
“We were one big family, but now this crisis has caused a serious division in the village.”
He also noted that even within Jawo Kunda, there are supporters of different political parties.
“The UDP chairman in the village, Alieu Juka Jallow, is from Jawo Kunda. He was even the UDP polling agent in the last election. They also have another brother who is an active member of the GDC. Yet, they keep accusing us, Jallow Kunda, of being the opposition,” Bohum explained.
