According to the facts of the case, the first accused stole seventeen thousand two hundred and fifty dalasis (D17,250) from one Fatou Ceesay (the complainant) after she received the money from the bank. The complainant said the money was sent to her by her husband to give it to his brother who was planning for a naming ceremony.
The first accused followed the complainant up to Serekunda and he inserted his hand inside the handbag of the complainant and stole the said amount. The first accused then passed the money to the second accused who ended up putting the money inside his underwear.
They were both caught and taken to the Serekunda Police Station. “We searched the accused persons and later recovered twelve thousand dalasis from the second accused person’s underwear,” said the Police prosecutor, N. Bojang.
The second accused pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy because he was the breadwinner of his family. He said he had never been in such a situation and that he regretted being involved in the crime.
Meanwhile, the Police Prosecutor revealed that the first accused had a pending case of a similar offence, and he applied that the court did not to grant him bail.
The court accepted the application and denied the first accused bail but fined the second accused on count one, two thousand dalasis (D2,000) in default to serve six months in prison and on count two, two thousand dalasis (D2,000) in default to serve six months in prison with a compensation of three thousand dalasis (D3,000) to the complainant.
The case was adjourned until 26 September 2023.
