Three years for burglar

The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court presided over by Magistrate Tabally recently convicted and sentenced one Modou Gaye to a mandatory jail term of three years, for stealing and shopbreaking.

Upon his own plea of guilty to the charges, he was sentence to one year in prison on count one, and three years with hard labour on count two. Both sentences were to run concurrently.

Gaye was also ordered to compensate the complainant in the sum of D10,000, and the court also ordered the recovered items to be returned to the owner.

The charge sheet on count one revealed that, on 20th December 2010 at Serekunda in the Kanifing Municipality, the convicted person, Modou Gaye, broke into the house of one Juldeh Sowe with intent to commit a felony to wit stealing.

Count two read that the convicted person after having broken into the said house stole the following items: Earphone valued at D7,000, T mobile phone Samsung valued at D1,500, one Samsung phone valued at D3,500 and cash amount of D3,500, being the property of the said Juldeh Sowe.
