City boys Real De Banjul have been crowned champions of the 2011-2012 Gambia Football Association (GFA) division one league title after thrashing Young Africans 3-1 in the all-Banjul derby game played at the Banjul Mini Stadium on Sunday.
Real De Banjul, who won the GFA division one league title in 2007, were not delivering to expectations since then.
Coach Alagie Sarr’s charges made a poor start to the 2011-2012 season but were able to gain their superb form in the second round and won majority of their games, which earned them the league title.
Real de Banjul opened the score through striker Buba Jallow, alias Melez, in the 32nd minute of the game.
Modou Njie-Sarr extended Real De Banjul’s lead in the 69th minute of the game from the penalty spot to increase his scoring tally to 15 goals breaking Bai Omar Samba’s goal-scoring record.
Buba Jallow, alias Melez, grabbed the third goal in the 71st minute of the game to earn Real De Banjul the league title after four years of trophy draught.
Yusupha Sarr’s 91st minute strike eventually proved to be a consolation goal for Young Africans.
Second-place Armed Forces beat Hawks 2-0 at the Brikama Box Bar Mini Stadium with goals from Modou Sarr and Alagie Bah in the 8th and 22nd minutes of the game respectively.
Gambia Ports Authority came from behind to draw 2-2 with Bakau giant killers at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
The 2010-2011 league champions drew 1-1 with Samger at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai Kunda.
Relegated side Serrekunda beat Bakau United 1-0 at the Serrekunda West Mini Stadium, while Gamtel also defeated relegated side Wallidan 1-0 at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium on the same day.
