IEC Chairman tours country ahead of voter registration

The Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, Alhagie Mustapha L. Carayol, is on a nationwide tour to meet with local authorities in a bid to map out the way forward in the upcoming general registration of voters, a statement from the IEC said yesterday.

This consultative platform, according to the IEC statement, will seek to address issues such as the problems often encountered in the administration of attestation forms, support to registration teams and enhancing the voter registration process in general.

"Regional Governors, Chiefs and Alkalolu will be met to address issues of concern in order to ensure a very successful voter registration exercise," the statement said, adding that Carayol met the local authorities of West Coast and Lower River regions on Thursday 31st March and 4th April 2011 respectively.

The IEC further announced that there will be similar meetings today Tuesday 5th, Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th April 2011 with the local authorities of Central River, Upper River and North Bank Regions respectively.

The tour will culminate with meetings in Banjul and Kanifing on Monday 11th April 2011.
