Good citizenship

Jun 22, 2011, 2:30 PM

To be a good citizen, first you have to be a good person. According to Wikipedia, a good citizen is one who properly fulfills his/her role as a citizen.

However, we are saying its goes beyond that, and that a good citizen is someone who respects others and their property.

He/she is helpful and considerate, willing to put others first.

Good citizens do listen to the views of others, and think about what they have to say.

They help people who are not in a position to help themselves.

He/she respects the environment, and does not damage it in anyway.

These types of people also work hard, and do not damage public properties like electric poles along our streets. They do not waste the water from our public taps.

As good citizens, we must be law-abiding and have love for ourselves, others and the country at large.

We must realize that we owe it to the country to work for the betterment of the nation.

Just like we always say in this and other columns, the development of this country cannot be brought about by outsiders, but Gambians.

The outsiders can only complement our efforts, but the main driving force that must champion our development is us (Gambians).

As Gambians, we have no other place but the Smiling Coast of Africa, The Gambia.

So let’s jealously guard it.
