Four Gambian Boxers Pass Trial

Jun 17, 2009, 7:56 AM

Four Gambian Boxers have successfully passed the first boxing trial in the form of competition, staged on Monday 15 June, 2009, by the Interim Committee of the Gambia Boxing Association.

Alieu Sanneh, Ousman Sanneh, Lang Dibba and Lauren Korea passed the test after putting up impressive performances over their opponents.

The ultimate objective of the trial, according to the Interim President of the Gambia Boxing Association, Tamsir Sarr, was to elect or select the best boxers that will represent the country in future national and international boxing competitions.

"We are also planning to organise at least four boxing trials locally and plans are ahead for our participation in the July 22nd activities," Tamsir told Pointsport shortly after the event.

Amadou Gikhan, the Technical Director of the Gambia Boxing Association disclosed that the association also intent to participate in the world boxing championship, slated to take place in Italy, as well as other international tournaments.

"The intensity of the challenges that is facing the association like the lack of offices and proper equipment are two main problems the association is looking forward to overcome in order to realise their dreams of bringing the glory days of boxing in the country," he stated.

Last month the interim committee of the boxing association has been tasked by the National Sports Council to manage the affairs of boxing in the country for the next three months, following the dissolution of the former executive due to some dubious activities.
