Farafenni Senior Secondary School were awarded a giant trophy and a cash prize of D10,000 after beating St Augustine Senior Secondary School by 3 sets to 1 in the just concluded Gambia Secondary School Sports Association volleyball final recently.
St Augustine who suffered a disappointing 3 sets to one defeat to the champions Farafenni in a well contested Volleyball final collected a cash prize of D6,000 as the runners up. The junior category which is still without a sponsor has also witnessed another titanic Volleyball final when St Augustine junior secondary school better known as (Pa Joof) suffered a two set to one defeat against Abuko Junior Volleyball Team.
The association according to assistant Secretary of the Secondary School Sports Association Lamin Jammeh have endured financial constraints which has also hindered their chances of completing the various volleyball tournament for the past four years and as a result called on the institutions to emulate Trust Bank ltd who sponsored the senior secondary school volleyball championship.
"This volleyball championship Jammeh added was purposely aimed at strengthens the cordial relationship among the participating schools across the country. The only way to promote grassroot sport is through school sports. There is the need for stakeholders to come on board in order to assist grassroot sports,"Jammeh was quoted as saying to Pointsports.
He noted that The Gambia Secondary school sports Association has a real national character due to the large number of coordinators across the country.
In a similar development, the volleyball tournament which was slated for July 17th 2009 as part of the activities marking the 22nd July anniversary has been suspended due to the logistics arrangement between the Gambia Volleyball Association and the National Sports council, the Volleyball president Musa Cassa Tall told our reporter yesterday.
