While Christians observe on Good Friday Jesus Christ’s suffering and death on the cross of the Lord, they also celebrate His resurrection on Sunday, which has made Easter Sunday one of the most well-attended Sunday services at the church.
Prior to this occasion, most Christians in The Gambia and the world over observed Lent, which is a 40-day period of fasting, repentance, and spiritual discipline to prepare oneself for the Easter.
Easter Sunday is recognised as day of joyous celebration and thanksgiving, as it was the day Christ resurrected as indicated in the holy Scriptures.
The biblical account of Jesus’ death on the cross, or crucifixion, his burial and his resurrection from the dead, can be found in the following passages of Scripture: Matthew 27:27-28:8; Mark 15:16-16:19; Luke 23:26-24:35; and John 19:16-20:30.
As stated by Sister Cynthia Mahoney in her article, ‘Christ’s Risen, Hallelujah!’, Christians all over the world rejoice at the fact that Christ’s suffering; death and resurrection marked a turning point in the relationship between God and the human race. It also bridged the gap between the Almighty God and humanity.
“Scripture states that Christ triumphed over the forces of evil and assures final victory over sin and death, especially to those who accept the atonement, declaring the Lordship of Jesus Christ, before whom, every knee in heaven and on earth will bow,” she said.
This shows how important Easter is to the Christians the world over.
We would, therefore, like to join our Christian brethren in celebrating this great occasion in peace, harmony and love.
“ God proved His love on the Cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the world, ‘I love you.”
Billy Graham
