Banjul
are set to fight with Gunjur for the 2016 FIBank-sponsored Super Nawettan title
today, Friday 28 October 2016.
The
City boys are set to host South boys in the most anticipated final of the
country’s community biggest football showdown at the Independence Stadium in
Bakau at 4.30pm.
Banjul
beat Serrekunda East 5-4 on penalties, after their goalless draw in the
regulation time in the semifinal game played at the Serrekunda West Mini
Stadium on Tuesday. They will also be fighting to beat Gunjur to end their
trophy drought.
Gunjur
sailed to the Super Nawettan final for the first time in their history
following their 4-2 penalty shootout win over Sukuta, after their 1-1 draw in
the regular time in the semifinal game played at the Serrekunda East Mini
Stadium.
Sukuta
opened the scores through Omar S. Bah in the 5th minute of the game from a
stunning long-range strike before Mbemba Fatty levelled matters for Gunjur in
the dying minute of the game from the penalty spot after defender Yusupha Darboe
handled the ball inside the eighteen to make it 1-1. Gunjur won 4-2 on
penalties.
The
South boys will be aiming for revenge to clinch their first-ever Super Nawettan
title after losing to Banjul 1-0 in the group phase.
Banjul
made a slow start to the 2016 FiBank-sponsored Super Nawettan following their
goalless draw against arch-rivals Bakau in their opening fixtures played at the
Serrekunda West Mini Stadium, before their goalless draw against Brufut in
their second game played at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai Kunda.
Banjul
beat Gunjur 1-0 in their group game to clinch their first victory before
goalless draw against Sukuta and 1-1 draw against Serrekunda East to final
fourth in group B with 7 points in five games.
Banjul
thumped BEM 2-0 in the quarterfinal game played at the Serrekunda West Mini
Stadium to advance to the semifinal, courtesy of Assan Gaye’s braced.

made an astonishing start to the 2016 FiBank-sponsored Super Nawettan campaign
following their 2-1 win over Brufut in their opening game played at the Brikama
Box Bar Mini Stadium, with goals from striker Lamin Jallow aka Sako and
midfielder Mbemba Fatty aka Andrea Iniesta, before their 1-1 draw against
Serrekunda East in their second game played at the Brikama Box Bar Mini
Stadium.
Gunjur
lost to Banjul 1-0 in their third game played at the Banjul KG5 Mini Stadium,
before thumping Bakau 2-0 in their fourth game played at the Serrekunda West
Mini Stadium, to bounce back in contention for a place in the quarterfinal.
Midfielder
Mbemba Fatty alias Andrea Iniesta and striker Lamin Jallow aka were on target
for Gunjur.
Gunjur
lost to Sukuta 1-0 in their final group game to finish third in group B with 7
points in five games.
Gunjur
thrashed Brikama 3-1 in the quarterfinal game played at the Serrekunda East
Mini Stadium to advance to the semifinal with goals by striker Malang Jassey
aka Uncle and a brace from midfielder Mbemba Fatty aka Andrea Iniesta.
Gunjur
progressed to the 2016 FiBank-sponsored Super Nawettan final following their
4-2 penalty shootout win over Sukuta, after their 1-1 draw in the regulation
time in the semifinal played at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium.
Banjul
have won the Super Nawettan more than any other zone since the inception of the
Super Nawettan in early 90s, and their last appearance in the Super Nawettan
final was in 2008 when they lost bitter-rivals Bakau 2-1 in a well-contested
final game played at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium.
Today’s
final will be the first-ever appearance for Gunjur in the country’s community
biggest football fiesta and have never won the championship since its inception
in early 90s.
Gunjur
made their first appearance in the Super Nawettan semifinal in 2003 under the
guidance of coach Buba Bada Bojang, but were eliminated by Bakau 2-1 at the
Serrekunda West Mini Stadium.
Gunjur
made their second appearance in the Super Nawettan semifinal in 2006, under the
guidance of coach Hatab Jobe but were eliminated by Serrekunda East 4-2 at the
Serrekunda West Mini Stadium.
Gunjur
made their third appearance in the Super Nawettan semifinal in 2008, under the
guidance of coach Lamin Kaku Jabang, but were eliminated by Banjul on
penalties, after the regulation time finished goalless at the Serrekunda East
Mini Stadium.
