In the life of the patriachs, God is known as the God of the impossible - meaning that He can do the unexpected, the out-of-the-ordinary. Yet when it came to making mothers of women like Sarah and Elizabeth who were well past menopause, doubt crept in.
In both cases, limits were put on God's ability to perform such miracles. This is the sole reason why Sarah laughed at the thought of birthing Isaac and Zachariah at fathering John.
Sarah's attitude was countered with "Is there anything too hard for me (God) to do?'" (Gen. 18:14)
God's record in this area is unmatched. We only need to scroll through the Bible to make a list of His wondrous works. Even at the very beginning, He made the earth out of nothing; created Adam, a human being out of mud and using one of Adam's ribs produced Eve - a help mate. In both instances, God, the Jehovah, proved that His hand was not short to do exactly as He had said.
Both characters were astonished to see what God could accomplish even where they considered themselves 'spent forces'.
What have you and I dismissed as impossible for God's handiwork to be realised in our lives - and as a result have laughed at the thought or idea? Well, the assurance is repeated today in our ears. "Ask!" for our "Father in heaven is able to give good gifts to those who ask Him". (Matthew 7:11b) God has great and mighty things in store for us.
