The initiative aimed at committing and dedicating both organisations to promoting health and well-being within Gunjur.
Buba Cham, a Gunjurian based in the United Kingdom (the UK), stated that diabetes and high blood pressure are two common health issues in The Gambia, and are prevalent in many communities in the country.
‘‘Gunjur Youths for Health and Gunjur Project The Gambia are not only raising awareness about the conditions but also encouraging early detection and prevention,’’ Cham said.
He said further that the proactive approach to healthcare was essential in ensuring that the community members live healthy and fulfilling lives.
Through their efforts, he noted, they are demonstrating a sense of responsibility and care for the well-being of others, saying they are showcasing individuals concerned about their own health.
‘‘The spirit of solidarity and compassion is what makes our community truly special,’’ he added.
Cham commended Gunjur Youth for Health and Gunjur Project for the screening activities in Gunjur Kajabang, describing the exercise as exceptional.
‘‘Both organisations are setting an example for others to follow and inspiring a culture of health and wellness in our communities,” he pointed out, saying: ‘‘We are proud of their efforts and grateful for the positive impact they are making on the lives of our fellow citizens.’’
Gunjur Youth for Health is a registered community-based organisation with formal trained health personnel endeavouring to participate, promote and deliver effective and efficient health service delivery to the communities beyond Gunjur voluntarily. And Gunjur Project The Gambia is a community-based tourism lodge established in 2005 in Gunjur.
Now an award-winning model of responsible tourism, Gunjur Project continues to support many community activities.
A total of 88 people got screened for diabetes and blood pressure.
For instance, when a lady from Gunjur Kajabang was identified as unwell with some complex medical issues, she was immediately transferred by the Gunjur Project’s transport directly to Africmed International hospital for emergency treatment.
The chairman of Gunjur Youth for Health, Dr Abubacarr Darboe, received financial sponsorship through Gunjur Project Association from high schools to the University of The Gambia.
Also D6,000 for up to 150 blood testing strips was paid by Multi-percussion visitors from The Netherlands.
Meanwhile, Gunjur Project The Gambia, in partnership with Rage Fitness in the United Kingdom (UK), is now offering health and well-being services to youths and adult groups in Gunjur and its satellite areas.
