Solace Foundation, Serrekunda East Sports Development Organization and Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia (SJAG) on Saturday held the first edition of their Breast Cancer Awareness day at Serrekunda East Mini Sports.

The breast cancer awareness day started with a march past from Tallinding market to the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium.

Speaking at the event, President of SESDO, Modou Yusupha Cham, stated that the main objective of SESDO was to organize sports championships.

Cham further stated the main function of SJAG is to report all sporting activities happening across the country, adding that Solace is a foundation that fights breast cancer.

"I can tell you it is not our common name but without health we cannot lose force without health.

SESDO cannot do sports without health. We came together here to ensure that this breast cancer awareness is done at Serrekunda East and well supported," Cham said.

Cham revealed that Dr Jaiteh and Dr Gitteh have been doing extremely well, adding that the duo use their busy schedules to make the event a success.

"I'm not a doctor but my awareness message is very clear, cancer is more than a problem.”

“The only time we can fight cancer is through early detection, scanning to know your status and then we fight cancer together.”

President of Solace of Foundation, Dr. Lamin Jaiteh, stated that event was a success one due to collaboration with their partners, while emphasizing the importance of joint efforts.

Dr Jaiteh pointed out that the event could not have been accomplished if they did not come together.

He honoured breast cancer fighters and survivors, while recognizing their courage and resilience.

Chef Saikou Bojang said mothers, sisters, wives and daughters are the people mostly affected.

“As a chef, we believe in what we call eat food as your medicine, rather than eating medicine as your food. If you eat good food, that's your medication to a good life, healthy body," Bojang pointed out.

Abdoulie Jawo, a member of SJAG said: "We come together, not just as members of the community but strong members of the communities that have a great responsibility to fulfill as far as raising awareness or breast cancer awareness is concerned."

He stated that breast cancer awareness is everyone’s responsibility.

“We want to assure you that you are not alone in this fight as breast cancer doesn't choose who it affects. It touches mother, sisters, colleagues and sport lovers.”
