Queens Scorpions leave for Yaoundé ahead of AWCON second round qualifiers

The Gambia National Women’s team (the Queen Scorpions) will today leave the country for Yaounde, Cameroon ahead of their first-leg of the second round of the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) second round qualifiers to be played in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

The second round qualifiers will be played in both home and away legs. The first leg will be played on 18th February 2022 in Yaoundé, Cameroon while the return will be in Banjul a week later.

 The team on Saturday went to camp at the football hotel in Yundum to continue its preparation for the all-important match.  Coach Boom Sowe early trimmed her squad to 23 players for this month’s double header against Cameroon.

Speaking to Pointsports at the National Training Centre in Yundum on Saturday, Coach Mariama Bom Sowe said they prepared the girls physically and mentally towards their upcoming game against Cameroon. She added that she expects her girls to go all out in order to collect the maximum three points and come back and finish the job at home and qualifier for the African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON).  

Haleema Hamilton Froiland who plays for FC Luzern Spitzenfussball Frauen (Switzerland), expressed delight and happiness to part of the team, saying both the players and coaching staff are cheerful and proud to be part of the team.

She added that it is an honour to represent The Gambia, noting that The Gambia has qualities and is capable of securing victory against Cameroon.

 Ida Mbye, who plays for IFK Goteborg (Sweden) said: “I am very grateful for this opportunity because Gambia is my homeland. It is a blessing to be able to represent my homeland in the jersey.”
