The Gambia U-20 team was termed as underdogs and France tipped as favourite.
“Looking at our team in Group F, we were the underdogs. It is not only about topping the group but the team putting up a respectable performance, dominating games and also being able to defend our goals,” said coach Bojang.
Coach Lie Bojang as he is fondly called, added that despite winning their first two games they had a problem on concentration, noting that his team improved a lot during their final group game against South Korea.
“We are taking it game-by-game going into the Round of 16 against Uruguay on Thursday. We will analyse them again to see their strengths and weaknesses,” he also said.
According to him, they want to see where they can capitalize on during the ninety minutes to emerge victorious.
“We do not look at names but what we are capable of doing. We (Gambia U-20 team) have been together for quite a while now and most of the players have played more than ten international games.”
He revealed that the Gambian team has both experienced and exposed players, adding that the team is growing from strength to strength from the WAFU, AFCON and now the World Cup tournament.
He expressed belief that the Gambian side can beat any team at their best.
The Gambia finished top of Group F with 7 points, while Uruguay secured 2nd in group E with 6 points.
