CAF bans Independence Stadium for failure to meet required standard

Feb 21, 2022, 2:25 PM

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has banned The Gambia’s Independence Stadium from hosting CAF A Type competition for failure to meet the required standard in a letter dated 16th February 2022.

As such, Gambia’s match against Chad scheduled for 29th March 2022 for the preliminary round qualifiers of the Africa cup of Nations Cote d'Ivoire 2023 will not be hosted at the Stadium.
The Confederation of African Football since 2019 informed authorities that the stadium must meet CAF requirements of a stadium to host international matches.

“Even though renovation and maintenance has started and authorities able to get temporal approval for the use of the stadium during the AFCON qualifiers for Cameroon 2021, now they are requested among others to:
1.     Re-grassing of the football ground
2.     Modern substitute benches
3.     Flood lights with 1200 lux and a standby generator for evening matches
4.     Complete renovation and expansion of the dressing rooms
5.     Modern first aid and treatment facilities for players and officials
6.     Seats for individual spectators;
7.     Equipped media facilities
8.     Training facilities
“The stadium is old and outdated in most of the existing facilities and lacks multiple CAF stadium requirements.”

There has never been any major maintenance and rehabilitation of the facilities since it was built in 1983. In this vein, there is need for massive investment to meet the required standard by CAF which the Ministry of Youth and Sports must facilitate and provide before the commencement of the group stage qualifiers in June 2022 to enable our home matches to be hosted at the stadium.
