Mendy was speaking to the Pointsports shortly after Tanji United clinched the maiden edition of the Kombo South District female football tournament trophy.
Tanji United defeated Sanyang United 3-1 in a final played at the Sanyang Football Field on Saturday.
“When we were organising the female tournament, we feared of violence but it became a trouble free tournament,” Mendy said.
Mendy noted that their main constraint was finance, adding that there was no sponsor for the female tournament unlike the male tournament.
She said that the entire tournament was sponsored by the Kombo South District Football Committee.
“It was very difficult because registration was free for teams and there were no gate takings for teams during the course of the tournament,” Mendy said.
Mendy called on other communities within the district to take part in the tournament come next year.
She also called on parents to allow their girl child to play football, adding that everyone is not good in classroom.
Mendy revealed that Kombo South District Football Committee would continue to knock on doors to secure sponsorship for the next edition.
Head Coach of Tanji United, Ismaila Manjang, expressed delight for winning the first edition of the Kombo South District female football tournament trophy.
Coach Manjang thanked everyone for supporting the tournament.
He also thanked the organizing committee of Kombo South District Football Committee for staging the tournament.
“We have female players in Kombo South but they are not competing anywhere, so organising this tournament would really aid girls to play football,” Manjang pointed out.
Head Coach of Sanyang United, Babucarr Sanyang, congratulated Tanji United for winning the first-ever Kombo South district female football tournament trophy, adding that football is win or lose.
