In a statement, Hon. Dampha urged citizens to reject hate speech, threats, personal attacks and inflammatory language, warning that political differences should not become a source of division among Gambians.
He noted that elections are an important component of democratic governance, providing citizens with an opportunity to express their views, support candidates of their choice, debate policies and hold political leaders accountable.
However, he stressed that political competition should be conducted with respect for the dignity and rights of others.
“Our political differences should never become a reason to insult, threaten, dehumanize, or divide one another,” Hon. Dampha stated.
He also highlighted the growing influence of social media in shaping public discourse, particularly during election periods.
According to him, information shared online can reach thousands of people within minutes, making it important for social media users to verify information before sharing it and to avoid content that could create fear, hatred or tension within communities.
Hon. Dampha particularly encouraged young people to take the lead in promoting peaceful political engagement.
“As young people, we must lead by example. We can disagree without becoming enemies. We can support different political positions while still respecting one another as Gambians,” he said.
He further called on citizens to focus political debates on issues and policies rather than personal attacks.
“Let us challenge ideas, not attack people. Let us promote dialogue instead of division, tolerance instead of hatred, and peace instead of provocation,” he urged.
Youth Parliamentarian also underscored the responsibility of Youth Parliamentarians to encourage young people to participate peacefully and responsibly in the country’s democratic process.
He said the December 5 election should provide an opportunity for Gambians to demonstrate that democratic participation and peaceful coexistence can go hand in hand.
“ Our political choices may differ, but our love for The Gambia should unite us,” Hon. Dampha said.
He concluded his appeal with a message of national unity: “Different opinions. One Gambia. One peaceful future.”
