The Turkish government, through its Embassy in The Gambia, awarded fully funded scholarships to 35 Gambian students to pursue higher education in the Republic of Türkiye.

To mark this significant achievement, the Yunus Emre Institute, the Gambian Alumni of Turkish Students, and the Turkish Ambassador jointly organised an orientation ceremony aimed at preparing the awardees for their academic journey abroad and the challenges that may lie ahead.

Yaya Sawo, President of the Turkish Alumni Students Association in The Gambia, expressed pride and gratitude for being part of the initiative, describing it as a tradition of support that has continued since the association’s founding in 2017. He stressed the importance of guiding and mentoring new members to help them settle, integrate, and contribute meaningfully both during their time abroad and upon their return.

“This generation has a vital role to play in driving positive change,” Sawo said. He commended the achievements already made by alumni, encouraged members to amplify their efforts, and extended heartfelt thanks to the Turkish Embassy for its consistent support. He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to unity, mentorship, and collective progress.

Talip Erdogan, Coordinator of the Yunus Emre Institute, highlighted the institute’s role in promoting Turkish culture in The Gambia. “The institute operates in more than 19 countries globally,” he noted, “and it’s not only about teaching the Turkish language—it’s about sharing our culture and building lasting relationships.”

He added that the institute welcomes anyone in The Gambia interested in learning about Turkish language and culture, with the aim of strengthening mutual understanding and ties between the two nations.

In his closing remarks, Ambassador OBA of the Turkish Embassy in The Gambia expressed appreciation to the scholarship recipients for attending the orientation. He described the event as an important beginning of their journey into Turkish language and culture, noting that once in Türkiye’s major cities, students will have greater opportunities for cultural exchange and advanced language studies.

Ambassador OBA also praised the Yunus Emre Institute as a vital hub for interaction, learning, and shared experiences, and said he was proud to be part of such a meaningful story of cooperation and growth.
