
The facility, designed to assist farmers during harvest seasons, is expected to significantly improve post-harvest storage and reduce crop losses. Community members expressed optimism about the project’s potential to enhance sustainability and strengthen local food systems.
Speaking during the visit, Dennis Elverirs AIC, Chief Executive Officer of a solar energy initiative supporting the project, announced plans to launch a complementary solar programme. The initiative is intended to reduce energy costs and promote long-term environmental sustainability.
“With the strong leadership and support of my boss, the Turkish Ambassador, we are committed to making this initiative a success,” Elverirs stated. “Our goal is to develop a model that not only benefits Pirang but can be replicated across communities nationwide.”
Elverirs also praised the enthusiastic turnout of villagers who welcomed the Ambassador, describing it as a testament to the community’s commitment and excitement.
“This is an example for the entire country. We are ready to support the Gambian people day and night to help The Gambia shine like Europe,” he added.
Representing the Alkalo, Muhammed Ceesay extended heartfelt thanks to Ambassador Bermek and his delegation for their continued support of grassroots development. He also commended Elverirs for his dedication to advancing solar energy solutions in The Gambia.
Ambassador Bermek expressed his pleasure at witnessing the progress of the cold room project, which he said is specifically tailored to support vegetable farmers in the region. He lauded the community’s dedication and reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
“We are exploring ways to integrate solar energy into this project to ensure its sustainability,” the Ambassador stated. “I am grateful to the Gambian government and people for the enduring partnership we share.”
The visit marks another milestone in the growing collaboration between Turkey and The Gambia, with both nations working together to promote sustainable development and empower local communities.
