
Sheikh Bonu becomes the sixth Imam to lead the community, which is renowned for its deep-rooted Islamic traditions and influence across Sierra Leone. The event drew Muslims from both Sierra Leone and The Gambia, reflecting the longstanding religious and cultural ties between the two nations.
Speaking to The Point newspaper, Bai Sainey Secka, Bilal of Banjul, who represented the Imam Ratib of Banjul, Alhajie Cherno Kah, as well as the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, the Ansarudeen, and the Aku Marabout community of Banjul, underscored the importance of the occasion.
He noted that the Fourah Bay community has a rich religious heritage and continues to serve as a spiritual hub for many followers in Freetown. Mr. Secka described the installation as “a unifying and blessed moment for the Muslim Ummah,” praising Sheikh Bonu’s leadership and commitment to faith and community development.
