The event was held at the Regional Teachers Credit Union Office in Brikama. The spelling bee is a nationwide contest for brilliant and courageous children from various Lower Basic Schools in the country.

The literacy programme is focused on helping children in Lower Basic schools to achieve competency at Grade Four (4); improve their reading and spelling levels.

At the event, Michael Hamadi Secka, a literature lecturer at the University of the Gambia (UTG), emphasised the importance of the initiative and how it is beneficial to the education system of the country.

He noted that as a country, ‘we must ensure that children are able to read and write as they are the future leaders of The Gambia.’

To this end, he stressed the need to support children in their academic journey and also encouraged pupils to continue reading to improve their skills.

Michael O. Taiwo, a judge of the competition, said every year they try to create new initiatives within the competition and also come up with different other forms of competition.

The initiative, he said, is to prepare Gambian pupils/students for the task that lies ahead of them, adding that through the years, they have seen a lot of improvement.

He thus expressed their readiness to continue innovating programmes that are in the interest of Gambian children.
