In a significant contribution to literary development and quality education in The Gambia, Alasan Njie, a native of Chamen Village in Nianija District, Central River Region North, has officially launched his book titled The Road to Nianija and Other Poems.

The colourful launching ceremony attracted government officials, education stakeholders, writers, teachers, youth leaders and members of the community, all gathered to celebrate what speakers described as an important addition to Gambian literature.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Njie underscored the importance of poetry as one of the most powerful and expressive forms of literature, capable of communicating ideas, emotions and social realities through creative language.

“Poetry remains one of the most expressive forms of literature because it uses language creatively to communicate ideas, emotions and social realities,” he stated.

He explained that poetry helps simplify complex concepts and enhances understanding through creative expression.

“As academics, part of our responsibility is to make complicated ideas simple. Writing poetically about concepts can help people better understand difficult subjects and even improve self-understanding,” he added.

The event was attended by several prominent figures including Prof. Cherno Omar Barry, President of the Writers’ Association of The Gambia; Hassoum Ceesay, Director General of the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC); Saikou Dibba, Regional Education Director for Region Five North; Dawda York, Chief of Nianija District; teachers from various school clusters and youth leaders.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hassoum Ceesay described the book as a rich literary work that explores themes of identity, justice, culture and human experience.

He noted that the poetry collection presents complex literary structures and rich language that require thoughtful analysis and appreciation.

“The book makes use of imagery, figurative expressions and cultural references that deepen its meaning and relevance,” he stated.

Prof. Cherno Omar Barry and Regional Education Director Saikou Dibba both praised the book for its educational value, saying it meets the country’s educational and literary standards.

They encouraged Gambians, especially young people and students, to read the book, noting that it could help readers better understand concepts through creative writing and critical thinking.

The two officials further described the publication as an inspiration to the younger generation to embrace reading and writing and continue contributing positively to national development through literature.

The launch of The Road to Nianija and Other Poems is being viewed by many as another milestone in efforts to promote Gambian authorship, preserve culture and encourage intellectual creativity among youths across the country.
