In terms of financial performance and positioning, the Union has realised impressive growth in member savings compared to the year ended 2024, increasing from D127,665,446 to D130,325,990, representing a net increase of D2,660,544.
Ceesay was speaking at the 19th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Credit Union of the Medical Research Council Unit at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (MRCG) LSHTM, The Gambia Cooperative Credit Union (MRCG-CCU), held on Saturday 27th June 2026, at the Fajara site.
The AGM was convened under the theme "Building Stronger Credit Union Through Strategic Consolidation,".
The gathering served as an opportunity and brings members of the MRCG Credit Union to review key developments, discuss matters affecting the Union, and participate in decision-making processes that shape the future of the Credit Union.
It also provides an opportunity for members and leadership to engage in the Credit Union’s progress, priorities, and plans which further highlighted the role of member participation in strengthening accountability, transparency, and the cooperative values of the Union.
Delivering the Union’s financial results for the year ended 31st December 2025, Mr. Ceesay revealed that loans disbursed moved fromD104,994,611 to D98,394,902 in 2025; a decrease which could be attributable to the effective implementation of the 75% payment requirement before being able to secure refinancing.
According to him, net operating income of D9,168,959 was realised and total operating expenses of D5,232,968 culminating into an unprecedented net surplus amount of D3,935,991.
Overall, he said, the total value of the credit union grew by 5% over 2024, with total assets increasing from D154,598,515 to D162,831,425, translating into a net increase of D8,232,910.
Lamin Bojang, chairperson of the board of directors of the MRCG-CCU, revealed that the board has fully implemented the Compliance Framework for Credit Unions in The Gambia.
The main objective of the document, he added, is sustainable transformation of the financial sector by strengthening the credit unions and promoting equal representation of women and youth in West Africa.
Bojang disclosed that the Loan Committee of the board disbursed a total of 786 loans in 2025, divided into 431 normal loans, 205 festive loans, 102 for school fees loans, 46 consumer loans and 2 emergency loans.
Abba Sankareh, registrar of Cooperatives applauded the MRCG-CCU for being one of the most successful Credit Unions in the country in terms of compliance while urging them to maintain the momentum.
