Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as thick smoke filled the early evening sky before flames engulfed the entire structure.
Councillor Jammeh, who represents Soldier Town Ward under the Banjul City Council, said he rushed to the scene immediately after being alerted.
“I arrived to find that fire officers had already brought the situation under control,” he said, praising the swift intervention of firefighters, which prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby homes in the densely populated area.
Despite escaping unharmed, the victim lost all his belongings in the inferno. The councillor described him as a well-respected member of the community known for his hard work and contributions to local development.
“He is someone who has always supported this community. Today, he needs the community’s support,” Jammeh said.
In the aftermath, Jammeh has launched a public appeal, urging residents and the wider public to assist the victim in rebuilding his life.
“This is a moment for solidarity. As a community, we must come together to support one of our own in his time of need,” he added.
Fire service personnel managed to contain the blaze shortly after arriving, averting what could have been a wider disaster. The cause of the fire remains unknown, with investigations ongoing.
Authorities have meanwhile called on residents to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures against fire hazards.
