Marie Antoinette Corr, general secretary of the Gambia Teachers Union (GTU) has renewed her union’s call for more investment in education. GS Corr made the remarks on Friday as the GTU marked its 87th anniversary.

“We remind the government of its primary responsibility and global commitment to finance education. We align ourselves to the global Education International Campaign, Go Public, Fund Education. This call resonates with our call for more investment in education, promotion of teacher and education support personnel welfare, including remuneration,” she stated.

In reflecting upon the remarkable journey of the union, she added “Since its inception in 1937, the GTU has played an instrumental role in shaping the educational landscape of The Gambia.  Over the years, it has evolved into a formidable force serving as a pillar of support for educators, offering them a collective voice, representation, and advocacy on issues affecting their profession and well-being.”

She added that the Gambia Teachers Union has been a driving force behind educational reforms and policy advancements in the country, by actively engaging with educational authorities, policy makers and stakeholders.

“The GTU's commitment to continuous improvement in the education sector is evident in its emphasis on professional development and capacity building.  This investment in the professional growth of educators has a ripple effect, positively impacting the overall educational experience for students,” she stated.

She also recognised and expressed gratitude to all those who had contributed to the success and legacy of the GTU over the years. “From its visionary founders and past leaders to the dedicated members and supporters who have tirelessly worked towards its goals, the union stands as a testament to the power of collective action and solidarity in advancing the cause of education,” she further said.

“May the Gambia Teachers Union continue to inspire, lead, and be a driving force for positive change in the realm of education and beyond.  Happy 87th Anniversary, GTU!,” she concluded.
