The Gambia Press Union (GPU) Awards Committee has announced plans ahead of the 10th National Journalism Awards to be held sometime this year.
At a recent press confab held at a local hotel in Kololi, Isatou Keita the president of Gambia Press Union, said the award committee remains focused on promoting active membership and excellence in journalism.

She also disclosed that only registered members, who have fully paid their dues will be eligible for consideration.

The decision, she added, aims to strengthen the union by encouraging journalists to become active members.

"This year, we will only accept award submissions from individuals who are registered and fully paid members of the GPU. The move is seen as a step towards building a more robust and committed membership."

The annual GPU National Journalism Awards has become a prestigious event in the country’s media landscape, bringing together journalists, government officials, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to celebrate excellence in journalism.

Further, this year's edition marks a decade since its inception, and the committee has confirmed that 15 award categories will be maintained, with the possibility of introducing new ones.

The awards cover a wide range of categories, including Business and Finance, Environment, Health, Sports, Human Rights, and Photojournalism, among others. Journalistic works published or broadcast between January 2024 and July 2025 are eligible for consideration.

Therese Gomez, vice chairperson of the Awards Committee, emphasised that the awards are not just about recognition, but about inspiring journalistic excellence across the country.

Thus, the committee urged eligible journalists to submit their work once the official call for submissions is made.

Meanwhile, journalists who are not registered or have pending dues are encouraged to regularise their status to ensure their eligibility.

"The Awards Committee also assured journalists of a merit-based selection process, with qualified judges identified to lead the evaluation process."

Ms. Gomez encouraged journalists not to lose hope but submit their work, emphasising that the committee is committed to recognising excellence in journalism.\

As the GPU prepares to celebrate a decade of promoting journalistic excellence, the stage is set for another exciting edition of the National Journalism Awards.  Will your story be among the winners?
