The Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS) recently embarked on its 2025 Voluntary National Review (VNR) process, reaffirming its dedication to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The launch event, held in Medical and Dental Council, brought together key stakeholders to emphasise on the importance of data-driven and inclusiveness in development. The VNR is more than a reporting exercise—it is an opportunity for them to assess their progress, address challenges, and commit to an equitable and sustainable future. This process embodies their shared vision of ensuring that no one is left behind.

Addressing the gathering, Statistician General, Nyakassi Sanyang highlighted the central role of the Bureau in the data collection and VNR process, describing GBoS as the “custodian of data” essential for tracking progress.

“Accurate and reliable data is the foundation of our efforts,” he said. “It enables us to measure our achievements and identify areas where action is needed most.”

He however acknowledged the challenges facing the country which include climate change, youth unemployment, and economic inequality.

“These hurdles are significant, but through collaboration and determination, we can overcome them,” he emphasised. “The VNR process provides a platform to address these issues strategically and inclusively.” he said.

Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mamadi Dampha, called for broad participation from all sectors of society. “Every Gambian has a role to play in achieving the SDGs,” he said adding “this is a collective effort, and we must ensure that the voices of the most vulnerable are heard and reflected in our plans.”

Expressing gratitude to stakeholders, DPS Dampha further commended the Ministry for their continued support and collaboration.

“Together, we can create a prosperous and sustainable future for generations to come.”

The launch sets in motion a comprehensive review process, culminating in the presentation of The Gambia’s progress at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum in July 2025.

“Let us move forward with a renewed sense of purpose and unity as we work toward achieving the SDGs.” he concluded.
