The donation comes at a critical moment as the humanitarian organisation continues to respond to emergencies nationwide, including a recently reported wreckage that claimed the lives of several young Gambians. The support is expected to enhance the Red Cross’operational capacity and ease the growing financial burden associated with rapid emergency interventions.
Presenting the cheque, the President of the Gambia Insurance Association, Momodou Musa Joof, said the contribution forms part of the association’s corporate social responsibility commitment to national development and human welfare.
He noted that the insurance sector recognises the vital role played by the Gambia Red Cross Society in saving lives and responding to crises, and urged other private sector institutions to partner with humanitarian organisations to help address pressing national challenges.
“We believe supporting institutions like the Red Cross is an investment in humanity and national resilience,” Joof said.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the GRCS, the Secretary General, Ebou Faye Njie, expressed profound appreciation to the insurance industry for what he described as timely and impactful support.
He explained that the Red Cross relies heavily on volunteers to deliver emergency assistance, particularly during disasters and humanitarian crises, adding that financial contributions such as this help sustain lifesaving operations and ensure rapid response when emergencies strike.
“This support will go a long way in strengthening our emergency preparedness and response capacity,” Njie said.
Also speaking at the event, Tayo Olowude, President of the ECOWAS Brown Card Scheme and Managing Director of IGI Gamstar Insurance Company Limited, commended the humanitarian work of the Gambia Red Cross Society and reaffirmed the insurance industry’s commitment to initiatives that promote human dignity, welfare and national development.
He stressed the importance of collective responsibility in addressing humanitarian crises, noting that collaboration between the private sector and humanitarian actors is key to protecting vulnerable communities.
The donation underscores the growing partnership between private sector institutions and humanitarian organisations in The Gambia, as efforts intensify to respond to emergencies, support vulnerable populations and save lives across the country.
