Alongside many accomplished Gambians across the United Kingdom, Mr Sillah was honoured with such an award for his outstanding contribution to the advancement of literature and publishing in the United Kingdom and The Gambia.
The award was presented to him by the Vice President of The Gambia, His Excellency Muhammed BS Jallow, following his attendance at this year’s London Book Fair.
The London Book Fair is the most popular book fair in the world. Annually, it brings together approximately 25,000 professionals in the book industry including publishers, booksellers, libraries, book distributors and literary agents. It is the global marketplace where people negotiate content rights and exchange ideas.
Mr Sillah in receiving the award said: “I’m so proud and honoured to receive this award in recognition of my efforts over the years.
“I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Government of the Republic of The Gambia under the leadership of President Adama Barrow for its recognition of our contribution towards nation building. I am sure it will go a long way to inspire homegrown talents.”
Mr Sillah, a bibliophile from a background with remarkable educational pedigree, said: “I have dedicated this award to my Jahanka ancestors who for many centuries dedicated their entire lives with huge commitment to spreading knowledge and guiding mankind. Massive congratulations to all those who received awards! May Allah bless us all.”
As millions of wellwishers gathered at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the crowning of King Charles III, the author was also thrilled to have been among the lucky few who had the opportunity to shake hands with him and exchange few words.
The author of a dozen books was also privileged to attend this year’s ‘Cambridge Africa Together Annual Conference’ as a panellist.
The conference was constituted on different panels and the discussion of his panel focused on Culture and Creative Art.
In particular, he shed light on how the creative arts industry contributes to preserving and promoting African cultural heritage. He shared the platform with Robin Walker and Mabinou Kolly.
He described the conference as educative and enlightening, saying that among the best speakers were Alasan Ceesay, a UK-based Gambian entrepreneur who also doubles as the chairman of the conference.
He thanked Mr Ceesay and his team for the invitation and for availing him the opportunity to grace such a noble gathering at the prestigious University of Cambridge.
