The Economics and Management Students Association had called for patience and unity among students at the School of Business and Public Administration (SBPA) at the University of The Gambia (UTG) amid recent academic disruptions due to the dismissal of two senior lecturers.

The two lecturers, Dr. Alieu Gibba and Professor Matarr Njie, are lecturing over 500 students at the country’s highest institute of learning and the termination of their employment came on the heels of Exams which is set for early December, 2024.

ECOMANSA is the sub-association representing students at the University of The Gambia.

While the student welfare body expressed deep concern over the issue, it affirmed their resolve for swift solution.

In a recent dispatch, the body assures all that they are actively engaging relevant stakeholders to address the issue.

The dispatch states: "We assure you that we are actively engaging with all relevant stakeholders to address the situation and to ensure that the interests and welfare of SBPA students are prioritized and protected."

"As the officially recognized body representing SBPA students, ECOMANSA is committed to serving as the primary bridge between students and the faculty. While we respect every student’s right to communicate directly with the faculty’s leadership and management, we kindly remind all students that a unified and coordinated approach through ECOMANSA enhances the effectiveness of our collective voice."

It adds: "Since this unfortunate incident occurred, the 21st Executive Council has been in continuous consultation with key stakeholders, including the Dean of SBPA, the Faculty Officer, the UTG Management (Vice Chancellor), the Directorate of Student Affairs, and the UTG Student Union."

While certain decisions and dynamics of this situation are beyond the immediate influence of ECOMANSA, the group in a dispatch expressed its unwavering efforts to ensure that students are not unfairly disadvantaged or made victims of this incident and setback.

"We particularly empathize with final-year students and those engaged in projects and under supervision, who may feel disproportionately affected. Rest assured, we are working to address these concerns and ensure that all necessary arrangements are made responsibly to mitigate the impact on your academic progress."

"To maintain an organized and effective dialogue, we strongly encourage all students to channel their queries, grievances, or suggestions through ECOMANSA. This allows us to present a consolidated, well-documented case to the faculty and other authorities for swift and efficient resolution. Rest assured that your academic concerns are our top priority, and we are committed to addressing them efficiently."

In concluding, it expresses its deep appreciation of students' patience, understanding and cooperation during ‘this challenging period,’ calling upon all to continue to work together as a united student body.
