The exercise was to ensure clean environment which is part of the council's mandates as well as to ensure a healthy life to create conducive environment to the society.
Speaking at the exercise, Wurrah Bah, deputy director of Admin on behalf of the Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, underscored the importance of the exercise in ensuring a clean environment.
He stressed the need to ensure good sanitation at all times, making reference to a popular adage that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation.
"By looking at the surroundings, considerable amount of uncollected waste littered by the people still remain in some parts of the Municipality despite the Council's effort to ensure no waste within the Municipality. Consequently, the Council engaged the association and provided the cleansing materials with trucks for the exercise."
Musa Sillah, coordinator and Protocol Officer at the Malian Embassy in The Gambia, dilated on the cardinal relationship that exists between Banjul and Bamako, acknowledging that the hospitality accorded to Malians in The Gambia, is remarkable.
To that end, he called on Malians living The Gambia to be law abiding and desist from any unlawful activities that may tarnish their image.
"For the cleansing exercise that we are embarking on today is an important milestone not only to the Council but to the entire nation."
Thus, officials believe that regular cleaning and proper waste disposal would greatly help create a safer and healthier space for everyone.
The exercise was attended by other senior diplomats from the Malian Embassy in the Gambia, senior managers and unit heads from the Anti Littering Unit and a cross section of the community.
