Residents of Kunting and surrounding communities in Central River Region (North) have received a major boost in healthcare delivery following a donation of medical items and essential drugs worth D200,000 by the Bolongdala Development Association.

The intervention, driven largely by members of the Diaspora, targets the Kunting Health Centre, a key facility serving five villages Kujew, Yonna, Tankong Kunda, Kunting and Dobo where access to affordable healthcare remains a pressing challenge.

Presenting the items, Sanna Conta, team leader and Diaspora representative of the association, said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to ease the burden on rural health facilities and improve service delivery.

Our objective is simple: to promote peace, stability and bring meaningful development to our communities, he said, stressing that the association’s work is purely humanitarian and not influenced by politics.

The donation comes at a time when many rural health centres continue to face shortages of essential medicines and supplies, often forcing patients to travel long distances or incur additional costs to access treatment.

Beyond healthcare, the association is also setting its sights on education. Conta revealed that plans are underway to introduce scholarship opportunities for underprivileged students to pursue tertiary education at the University of The Gambia.

We believe education is key to long-term development, and we are committed to supporting young people to achieve their academic goals, he added.

Providing further insight into the association’s track record, Chief Finance Officer Malick Kijera disclosed that Bolongdala Development Association has already invested over D1 million in community development projects.

He stated that their first major intervention included the drilling of a kolong bolong and canal construction project valued at D550,000, alongside youth empowerment initiatives such as sponsoring local football tournaments.

All these projects are funded through the collective contributions of our members, especially those in the diaspora who remain committed to giving back home,Kijera explained.

The association has since called on development partners, philanthropists and non-governmental organisations to support and scale up its interventions, as it seeks to expand its impact across the region.

For many in Kunting, the latest donation is more than just a gesture. It is a timely lifeline that underscores the growing role of community-led and Diaspora-driven initiatives in addressing gaps in public service delivery.
