The Banjul American International School (BAIS) last Friday celebrated Gambian National Day at a ceremony held at its Fajara campus. The event was held in advance of The Gambia’s 59th Independence Day celebration.

The celebration was jointly hosted by Mr. Valentine Williams and Ms. Fatoumatta Jobe (two of BAIS’s talented teaching assistants.) The day brought together a diverse audience, including BAIS families and esteemed guests from the US Embassy, Medical Research Council, European Union Delegation, and the United Nations.

The occasion also witnessed presentations on various facets of Gambian culture, insightful historical insights, and vibrant displays of traditional dances and masquerades. The audience was treated to a comprehensive exploration of The Gambia's rich heritage.

The celebration was further highlighted with a surprise performance by the Bachinab Cultural Troupe of Fajikunda; their electrifying drumming, mesmerising dances and captivating stilt-walking left attendees in awe. The audience enthusiastically joined in the revelry, dancing and applauding with delight, particularly during the gorilla dancer's thrilling appearance and the Kumpo's frightening and awe-inspiring performance.

As the celebration drew to a close, BAIS students, parents and staff gathered to indulge in a sumptuous feast of Gambian delicacies, generously provided by parents and accompanied by refreshing local drinks organised by the BAIS Student Council. The sense of community spirit was palpable as BAIS Student Council leader, Simon Badjie expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort in celebrating the 2024 momentous occasion.

On the auspicious occasion of The Gambia's 59th year of independence, the BAIS community extended heartfelt wishes for continued peace and prosperity to the nation. Through cultural exchange and appreciation, BAIS remains committed to fostering a deep sense of admiration for the Gambian people and their enduring spirit.

Furthermore, all members of the BAIS community, including students, parents and staff expressed their gratitude for being able to live in The Gambia and their admiration for the Gambian people. On the 59th year of Gambia’s nationhood, the BAIS school community offers their most sincere wishes for peace to grace the Gambian people and for prosperity to brighten the nation’s continued future as a multicultural and democratic nation.

BAIS is an accredited international school providing a meaningful, rigorous American curriculum in a global context. In August, 2024, BAIS would celebrate its 40th anniversary in providing excellent, international-quality education and holistic care for each and every BAIS student.
