Woman commits suicide in Abuko

A 41-year-old woman identified as Laliya Nyassi, a native of Abuko is reported to have committed suicide on Thursday evening, The Point has been informed.

She was believed to have committed suicide on Thursday morning before her body was discovered at an isolated place in Abuko and also before the attention of the police was called for investigation.

Omar Jammeh, the husband of the deceased, said: “I gave my wife (deceased) breakfast so I decided to see-off a boy who hailed from Guinea Bissau since on Monday.”

He continued: “Upon my return from the airport where I went to accompany the boy from Bissau who was travelling to Serbia, I did not find her (deceased) home, but her phone was placed on the bed so I was confused,” he said.

“The situation was very strange to me so I decided to go to their compound and find out whether she was there, but when I got there, I found out that she wasn’t there.”

Immediately I found out that she was not there, I decided to go round the neighborhood searching for her but did not find her.

Eventually I called my brother to inform him that my wife left home since morning but did not return.

He said the deceased brother said that she (the deceased) sent him a voice note saying she was going to kill herself. So we continued searching for her but we could not find her, so we went to report the matter to Abuko Police Station,” he explained.

He added that upon arrival at the police station, the police informed them they had a case of a woman who committed suicide and was taken to Banjul. When we saw her picture, we realised that it was her,” he narated.

Jammeh said his wife had no mental issue since they got married.

Isatou Tamba, a relative, said the deceased gave her keys and told her she was going out but when she asked where she was going, she told her she was going somewhere.

“Later in the day, I received the news that she has committed suicide”, while describing the deceased as a pious Muslim who was very down to earth.

The deceased was laid to rest on Friday 23 December 2022 at the Abuko cemetery at 5pm. She left behind five children - three boys and two girls.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach the police spokesperson Assistant cadet Binta Njie-Jatta remained futile at the time of going press.
