UDP calls for maximum fines, custodial sentencing for drifters

The United Democratic Party (UDP) says its deeply concerned while condemning what it called “dangerous and reckless” drifting activities being carried out in the Greater Banjul Area by a group of youths.

The UDP therefore in a press release called on the National Assembly to pass stringent laws introducing high minimum fines and mandatory custodial sentences for drifting offences.

The release reads below:

“The United Democratic Party (UDP) expresses its deep concern and condemnation over the dangerous and reckless drifting activities being carried out in the Greater Banjul Area by a group of youths calling themselves the so-called “Outlawz.”

This lawless behaviour is not only risking the lives of the very youths involved, but it also poses a grave danger to the general public and property. Innocent people have already lost their lives, and several have sustained serious injuries due to the recklessness of these drivers—many of whom do not even possess a valid driver’s license. Disturbingly, some of these drifters are minors, yet they are allowed to take control of powerful vehicles and endanger lives with impunity.

The UDP is dismayed that the Barrow government has failed to take decisive action to put an end to this menace. Instead of enforcing the law and protecting the lives of Gambians, the authorities continue to turn a blind eye. The majority of these offenders are reported to come from affluent families, a factor that has led to police inaction and lenient court penalties. Those few who are arrested are often released with insignificant fines that do little to deter repeat offences. This must stop. Enough is Enough.

The UDP also warns of a dangerous new trend arising out of this inaction. Recently, youths in Jabang took the law into their own hands by attacking drifters and damaging their vehicles. Such incidents are a direct consequence of the government and security forces failing to act. This is leading to the growth of a vigilante culture, which is the last thing The Gambia needs. No society can thrive where citizens are forced to take the law into their own hands due to weak governance.

The UDP believes this reckless disregard for public safety clearly shows how little the Barrow government cares about the security and well-being of Gambians. We therefore call for urgent and concrete action:

  1. Immediate establishment of a dedicated Anti-Drifting Unit within the Police Force, adequately resourced and empowered to enforce the law.
  2. The National Assembly to pass stringent laws introducing high minimum fines and mandatory custodial sentences for drifting offences.
  3. The creation of a special fast-track court to deal with drifters swiftly and decisively.
  4. Security sector reform to ensure discipline, motivation, and professionalism within our security services. The current lack of reform, coupled with low morale, continues to undermine law enforcement capacity.

The safety and security of Gambians cannot be compromised by a reckless few. The UDP stands firmly with the victims of this menace and will continue to demand accountability, justice, and decisive government action.”
