The mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe, is set to be celebrated as the African Woman of the Year 2024. The Pan-African magazine, and The Voice News Magazine, based in the Netherlands, bestowed this prestigious award on Mayor Lowe for her outstanding dedication to public service and transformative leadership. The ceremony is scheduled on August 16, 2024, at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mayor Lowe is recognised for her relentless efforts in supporting the Gambian government to deliver world-class services, improving the lives of citizens in Banjul and beyond.

The organisers of the event commended her hard work, commitment, dedication, intelligence, and servant leadership, which have significantly contributed to the development of Banjul as a model of good governance.

Upon receiving the award nomination, Mayor Lowe expressed her humility and dedicated the honour to the people of Banjul and The Gambia. She attributed her success to their support and appreciation, which motivates her to work tirelessly for the advancement of her country.

In an interview with The Point, Mayor Lowe stated that this accolade underscores the growing recognition of Gambia's influence and importance on the global stage.

She indicated that her nomination and selection are attributed to her numerous roles including serving as the Mayor of Banjul, President of the Local Elected Women in Africa (REFELA), Vice President of the Global Parliament of Mayors (GPM), Second Vice President of the United Democratic Party (UDP) in Gambia, board member of Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, and Chairperson of the Banjul Youth Diplomats.

The award ceremony, as part of a two-day Kenyan Business Summit, will feature the theme: “Transforming Africa with the Diaspora for Sustainable Developments.” The Voice Achievers Award, established nearly 13 years ago, annually recognises outstanding individuals who have significantly contributed to the advancement of Africa and its people.
