The SSHFC donated at least seven different food items to pensioners and bedridden pensioners across the country as part of its Social Corporate Responsibility.
Mr. Saloum Malang, the managing director of SSHFC at the presentation of the food items, described it is a culture that every Ramadan, SSHFC distributes food items to pensioners who have served their best to the country.
He also described the day as memorable for the corporation and pensioners, disclosing that food items distributed were bags of onion, bags of potatoes, bags of sugar, bags of rice, cooking oil, tea bags and tomato paste among others.
“This year's distribution of food items is unique because Ramadan and Lent are both going on at the same time. And both sets will benefit.”
MD Malang highlighted that fasting is a period of extending a helping hand to a vulnerable people and is worthy and rewarding.
He made it clear that pensioners in urban areas are not the only ones benefiting from the donations given but also pensioners from the rural communities in all the regions will also benefit from the gesture.
He described Social Security as Social Protection organisation whose mandate is to focus on vulnerable people in both Islamic and Christian communities. According to him, both religions hold a strong belief for helping and giving during fasting months.
The Social Security boss said pensioners are the pillars of society; and for the reason, they have laid the foundation for progress. “It is both our duty and our honour to give back to you not just through words but through meaningful actions that demonstrate our gratitude and respect,” he stated.
Alhagie Chox Faal, a pensioner, and a board member of SSHFC, asserted that the gesture was timely, while acknowledging SSHFC for supporting people in need during the fasting period of both faiths.
“It’s said that charity begins at home. They are giving us charity, and we the pensioners are grateful but it is also part of their social and corporate responsibility,” he said.
He added the food items would help them and their families.
“We are vulnerable people. What we need is support and Social Security is doing just that, because every Ramadan they donate food items to us.”
Mr. Faal, who spoke on behalf of pensioners, called on Social Security to fast track payment of pensioners allowances at all times.
