The Kanifing Muncipal Police contacted the fire service however before their arrival the community youths first engaged the fire for about half an hour before the first fire service vehicle responded. A second fire service vehicle responded shortly after and the fire was then extinguished at around 3am. Unfortunately 9 canteens were destroyed.
The source of the fire was established to have been caused by a Power Surge or Electrical Spark emanating from a wire connected to a Cosmetic Shop with inflammable oils. The shop was flanked by two milling machines that shared same electrical connection.
We sympathize with the shop owners for their loss and we strongly advise all vendors within and in the peripheral of the market to ensure their electrical wiring is in good order! The market management will also review all connections within the market vicinity in the coming days.
