As coalition controversy continues to shake the country from across its length and breadth, the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) has expressed its full, complete and unwavering commitment to coalition-building.

This timely statement of commitment comes at a time when contentions surround the entire issue of coalition-building, as other opposition parties and political leaders continue to batter words, blame one another and point fingers at each other, marking a period of intense political hostility - not between the ruling group and the opposition, but rather within the opposition circle.

Meanwhile, the PDOIS, in a 7th July press statement reaffirms its commitment and reassures the public of its resolve towards coalition-building.

The PDOIS states: "Conscious of the dire need for constitutional, legal, electoral, administrative and institutional reforms; aware of the pressing demand of the time to facilitate these reforms by replacing the current government with a credible coalition that is committed to spearheading these reforms; acknowledging that the experience of 2016 has amply demonstrated that there must be safeguards to ensure that reforms are expedited; having regard to the election laws which stipulate that political parties may be established to participate in shaping the political will of the people and sponsor candidates for public elections, and considering that the 2025 Congress had assigned Halifa Sallah and Sidia Jatta to initiate an inclusive coalition to lead a change of government to effect the reforms, the Central Committee at its session of 3rd-4th July 2026 reviewed and endorsed efforts made so far by the Committee of Bureaus on coalition building and has directed it to continue this path.

"In particular, the Central Committee approved the ongoing consultation with the coalition initiative to build Team Gambia 2026 and the presentation made to it. It further approved the position of the Committee of Bureaus to maximise efforts in pursuing a change that will effect reforms and not a mere regime change, which will be a change for its sake and instructed it to continue this path. The Central Committee resolved to engage in the 2026-2027 election cycle at the level of the presidency, the National Assembly and the councils."

With PDOIS having made this reaffirmation as election looms, Gambians wait with hope to see where things will eventually culminate.
