The Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Mr. Emmanuel Daniel Joof, recently paid a courtesy visit on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Seedy Muctar Touray, to reinforce cooperation between their institutions in upholding human rights and the rule of law.

During their discussion, Mr. Joof commended the ongoing partnership between the NHRC and the police, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to supporting law enforcement, particularly through capacity-building initiatives. He highlighted the NHRC’s newly developed training modules on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, International Human Rights Law, and International Humanitarian Law, which are designed to be integrated into police training programmes. He also referenced past training sessions conducted by the NHRC to enhance police officers’ understanding of human rights principles.

Emphasising the NHRC’s mandate, Mr. Joof stressed the Commission’s role in promoting and protecting human rights and its advisory function to institutions on rights-related matters. He called for stronger collaboration, particularly in ensuring timely feedback on complaints submitted against the police, prompt responses to NHRC inquiries, and effective implementation of NHRC recommendations.

In response, IGP Touray welcomed the engagement and affirmed the police’s commitment to working closely with the NHRC to uphold human rights standards. Both parties agreed to deepen their collaboration to foster respect for the rule of law and due process.
